Zoltán Szilvássy may become the first rector in the centennial history of the University of Debrecen to hold this position for the longest time without interruption. His application for the position of rector was adjudicated by the Senate of the University of Debrecen on February 23, 2017, and a significant majority of the members of this body supported his candidacy. Upon the recommendation and nomination of the Minister of Human Resources, Professor Szilvássy was appointed by the President of the Republic of Hungary to be in charge of the management and supervision of the University of Debrecen until April 30, 2022.
In his application package, the newly elected former rector highlighted the importance of strengthening the role of the university in higher education both in Hungary and abroad, the development and upgrading of current programs in engineering, as well as the improvement of the conditions available for the programs completed by international students. In addition to these objectives, he would also wish to reform the interior innovation system of the university, introduce research-harmonized projects, and increase the revenues coming from cooperation with different industries, as the continuation of the implementation of targets defined during the previous cycle of his responsibilities.
