Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) released their latest (2017) rankings for universities on October 16, 2017. This year, the University of Debrecen continues to be the best institution of higher education outside the capital city, ranked 694th on the list, while Eötvös Loránd University is the 515th and Semmelweis University is the 611th. According to the indicator based on the number of patents, UD comes second among Hungarian universities, as well as according to the indicator based on citations.
CWUR rankings of universities are prepared on the basis of eight indicators: quality of education (25%), alumni employment (25%), quality of faculty (25%), publications (5%), influence (5%), citations (5%), broad impact based on the so-called h-index (5%), and the number of patents (5%).

As opposed to the QS World University Rankings, this list displays the quality of the universities in developing countries mor objectively, since it does not contain institutions from the English-speaking world. The most recent list compares the indicators of more than three hundred universities from as many as twenty countries, and the best 250 of these are ranked. From Hungary, eight universities have made it to the final list.

For the list, a total of nine factors have been assessed: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty/student ratio (15%), papers per faculty and web impact (10%-10%), staff with a PhD and citations per paper (5%-5%), and international faculty and international students (2.5%-2.5%).
